Biscuit, our cheeky Shetland pony, is back from his longer-than-hoped stay with ponies in the village —and wasted no time making his presence felt. Initially placed in a paddock beside our Exmoor ponies, he took matters into his own hooves, deciding that electric fencing is meaningless to a fearless Shetland. With a bold leap and zero hesitation, he joined the Exmoor’s on their track instead! Biscuit then spent a lively afternoon auditioning for the Shetland Grand National, showing off his high-kicks and declaring (with great gusto) that while he may be smaller, he can kick higher than they can! The Exmoor’s, quite frankly, looked bewildered by the sudden arrival of this blond tornado in “their” space.
We’ve been expanding our hen house setup to welcome a new batch of young hens, hoping to keep the egg supply steady through winter. At the same time, we’re keeping a close eye on Avian Influenza alerts from APHA. With recent cases reported uncomfortably close at the RSPB Ham Wall reserve, we’re bracing for a likely “flockdown” and taking precautions to keep our birds safe.
Meanwhile, it’s a race against time to finish some much-needed fencing before our three remaining Dexters and the sheep return from the Glebe land by the 31st. The countdown is on, and we’re doing everything we can to ensure they come home to a secure and well-prepared space.
