Our Story

Discover the Journey of Western Farm Kingsdon

Western Farm, Kingsdon was established in the 1950’s when egg production was required to meet the post-war demand. Joe Attwell had a true passion for poultry that he used to build his 32,000 strong poultry farm. Back then keeping hens in batteries was normal and accepted; where Joe was different was that he’d keep less hens per battery than he was allowed, to improve their welfare. He also bred chicks – and sent them all over the world.
Now run by us, Joe’s grandson Paul and fiancée Bex, we do things a little differently with hens kept free-range as much as possible* and far lower numbers. We have a mixed smallholding of approx 12 acres on which we keep our few Dexter cattle, small flock of sheep and approximately 100 hens, with plans to gradually scale up the poultry to a maximum of 350 birds. At present they are kept for eggs although in time we may look at producing some meat birds as well.

We’re based on the edge of the small village of Kingsdon in South Somerset UK, where we have a self-serve kiosk in our yard for eggs and compost. We are starting to take our eggs to local farmers markets as well.

On our smallholding we also run Ruffles Hen Hotels, providing hospitality for visiting hens whose owners might be going on holiday or moving house.

*When Avian Flu flockdown restrictions dictate, our hens are kept in a large airy barn.

1950's - Western Farm established

Our story began back in the 1950's when Joe established his poultry business

2022 - Ruffles Hen Hotels established

After several fallow years where Paul had followed other lines of work, Bex established Ruffles Hen Hotel which started the revival of farming activities at Western Farm

Feb 2023 - Mary arrived!

Mary was the first Dexter cow to be bought onto the farm - by Bex's son who then went on to start the herd we currently run.

Mar 2023 - Sheeps!

We didn't think we wanted sheeps*...but Bex's daughter ended up with Mint and Pepper, 2 orphan lambs she'd ended up with at the end of market one Saturday.
Shown here in the "Lamborghini" which was used to take them to their night quarters when they were still very small!
*Clarkson has a lot to answer for, we know it's sheep really!

Jun 2023 - Eco-friendly Strimmers!

We were struggling to keep on top of the brambles and decided to invest in 2 eco-friendly strimmers - we should have called them Sickle and Scythe, but instead we have these 2 gorgeous girlies, Flossie and Poppy who you may see around the yard when you come for eggs and compost!

Summer 2024 - More sheeps!

When the 2 orphan sheeps went we realised how much they'd done to improve the ground and how much we missed their presence, so we decided to get more! This time we chose Easycares... self-shedding, overall easy to keep sheep. Then we were offered some Black Welsh Mountains who we couldn't say no to - so much for no shearing!

Dec 2024 - Hen Maths!

We went from 4 of our own chooks to, urm, over 100! Starting our mission to provide soya-free eggs to more than just us, and returning Western Farm to its roots as we dip our toes into the world of semi-commercial poultry farming.

Meet Us

Our Team

Welcome to our farm! Here’s a glimpse of the dedicated team that brings fresh produce to your table.

Paul

Chief

Paul has the ultimate say in what goes on at the farm! He has been here all his life so has a wealth of experience and knowledge

Bex

Jill of all trades...

Bex is Paul’s sidekick and keeps everything running smoothly(ish) as well as handling all the tech side of things and customer service

Oily

Champion creator and fixer

Every farm needs an Oily – that man who knows how to make something from what others would consider scrap; that man who can put up fencing, design and build when Bex comes up with yet another crazy plan, and who knows how to fix our aging equipment when it fails under continuous testing for the umpteenth time.

Freya

Shepherd and Photographer

Freya is our shepherding consultant – when we need help with tagging, foot trimming, general handling, Freya is our girl… she’s also a fabulous photographer.

Sally

Oily's ever patient & wonderful wife

If Sally could she’d have Oily working on all the projects at their home which is a work-in-progress as much as our farm is. We’re eternally grateful that she shares Oily with us so he can come and “play” at ours because without his help we’d really struggle to achieve all we’re doing right now.

Alex

aka "Man Friday"

Since meeting Alex as a customer earlier this year, who rather rashly offered to come and help any time we might need an extra pair of hands, he’s rapidly become part of our team – always keen to get stuck in and very much appreciated extra muscle when we’re not necessarily firing on all cylinders ourselves.
