We pride ourselves on doing things differently and that includes ensuring that our hens “end of working life” is not handled by contractors who come in to clear and cull. 

Instead we will rehome hens as they head towards retirement and are ready for a quieter environment for their twilight years. We try to rehome in groups of 3 or more hens that are known to be getting on well together. We can also help out with advice regarding creating “flockdown” ready hen runs and providing suitable housing.

With the best will in the world hens can be truly vile to one another and this is often seen in larger flocks, even ours unfortunately. Sometimes we’ll separate a bullied hen, she may have been injured and need tlc which we provide. We don’t always return her to the main flock if we feel that doing so will cause her more problems. This often results in us having more hens taking up our hospital wing and spilling over into our hen hotels than we’d like and this is where we look at rehoming as a kinder long term option for the hens. 

Would you like to rehome some older ex-commercial hens? 

• They may or may not be laying
• They may or may not come back into lay (most do from our own experience of homing old ex-comms) but:
• They’ll be gentle and, once they know their new family, they’ll be friendly, calm and happy to be handled. They make fabulous pets.
• Some might also require some extra care. 
• With our Hen Hotels we are able to provide care for your hens any time you go away, or maybe move house, so continuity of care is never something to worry about and if your flock has come from us we’ll offer you a small discount on your first booking.

If you would like to discuss the possibility of taking on some of our beautiful older ladies please do get in touch, only special homes will be accepted for our girls – we make sure we know where they will be kept and that you have enough knowledge to provide the care they require – we can help with this if you are new to keeping poultry. You get to see where your hens have come from, we don’t let them go to anyone who will sell them on again.
