Fresh Free Range Eggs
from Our Soya-free Fed Hens
Discover the taste of nature with our eggs laid fresh for you by our “production team”. Our hens are kept in free range enclosures and given a high quality soya-free diet to ensure that this allergen doesn’t come through their eggs.
Why are we different?
Discover what makes our eggs an ethical choice
We give hens a second chance
Our first intake of hens came from a commercial unit. These hens at 72 weeks old might otherwise have gone in pet food tins. We won’t get rich from this policy, however our lives are definitely enriched as these little red commercial hybrid hens are so friendly and inquisitive. Each has her own unique character.
In addition to our older flock we do also have younger hens to ensure we have a regular supply of eggs available every day.
Our hens either live out their days with us, or occasionally we will rehome some of our older hens.
No Soya here
The majority of all animal feed in the UK is now based on GMO Soya which is imported as we do not grow it as a crop in this country.
Soya is a major allergen and it is due to Bex’s own intolerance of soya that we went soya-free in the first place.
Free Range in Small Flocks
Most commercial farms, producing for supermarkets, will have thousands of hens in a shed, providing hens with indoor space that will fit 9 hens per square metre (we were horrified when we were reading this in the regulations for indoor living space for free range hens – outside isn’t quite so bad, they have 4 square metres per hen). Very often the vastness of large commercial units will mean a significant number of hens will never set foot outside their housing due to hen hierarchy and pecking orders. All our girls go outside every day and we can easily spot any issues as they happen. We will remove any poorly hens to our isolation “hospital” wing where they receive extra TLC to give them a chance to fully recover.
Enhanced living conditions
We ensure that we not only meet the industry regulations but we exceed them.
We provide more housing space per hen, more roosting bar space and more nest-boxes than we have to. Likewise with feeders and drinkers.
Each hen house is mobile, enabling us to move hens to fresh ground easily.
What Colour Chart?!
When Bex briefly worked at a commercial egg farm she was told that the hens were fed to a colour chart – the supermarket said what colour the eggs/yolks were to be, and the hens were fed accordingly. We don’t do that here! We provide a quality layers pellet feed alongside daily mixed corn (both soya-free) and fresh veg when available. As a result there will be natural variations in the yolk colour across different eggs depending on what the hens who laid them were eating on the day the yolk was forming. Every egg is always full of flavour.
